About this blog

Musings of a wondering and wandering mind.

Sharing thoughts, and sometimes actions, about the relationship between our environment and behaviour.

Behaviour not just as individuals but also at higher scales – households, communities, companies, cities, countries…

The big issues facing us, the massive opportunities for action. Sometimes seemingly small issues but part of the same larger problematic patterns of our systems and habits. But hopefully always something thought-provoking, even entertaining or fun. That’s what this blog is about.

About me

I’m Vivek, an independent researcher in Bengaluru (earlier Bangalore), India. I work primarily in urban settings in demand and waste reduction through behavioural interventions.

My research is often through norm-nudging interventions based on sound theories.

I also work in practice to apply existing knowledge to solve problems in ecology and environment spheres.

Short-Bio:

Vivek is an independent researcher working at the intersection of human behaviour and the environment. He is a PhD from the Centre for Public Policy at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB-CPP). He was a Partner at Infosys Consulting and a Vice-President at Infosys before joining full-time PhD in 2013 to pursue his interest in India’s public policy challenges. He has global work experience in public goods, with focus on distribution and customer service, and how to make it easy to conserve resources through a combination of efficiency and curtailment.

Vivek is working on multiple research projects, such as norm-nudging interventions based on proven behavioural theories. One such project is for Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE), a global initiative led by India’s planning body Niti Ayog. His proposal in reducing energy use was selected as one of the five winners in their Global Call for Ideas and Proposals (GCIP).

His doctoral thesis was in water conservation behaviour in urban households. He has also studied water and groundwater from multiple research perspectives including legal, political economy and hydro-geological perspective. He has completed work on a project with ATREE (Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment) in rural drinking water supply. His role was to guide development of research plans and methods. A subset of his academic work is listed at https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Vivek-Vivek/publications

Vivek is also active in hands-on action through volunteer work, such as improving water management in his community through rainwater harvesting and planting of native trees. He is a member of several organizations working on better social and environmental outcomes through reduction of wasteful consumption by the affluent.
